If you use a raspberry pi Zero they are running 5 bucks + old web cam. Not a bad deal for a DVR. At this time all the software is free.

I hade to make the Baofeng radio to TNC /Sound Card cable because the Baofeng is designed to key up the radio when the Grounds of the Speaker and microphone are shorted. This presented a problem when using a USB sound card for a interface. the universal ground what shorting the two leads. so we need to make a ground loop isolator and set the radio to VOX. not it words for the SVXLink on the Raspberry Pi Repeater / Echolink Node.

Making power lugs is easy and cheap.

In the past I have just used spark plugs too.

How it works:
Once the air has ionized, it becomes a conductor. And the dielectric breakdown of the air makes it a conductor and will pass the static charge/lightning strike to ground. Its kind of a one shot deal and it’s better than nothing. Its mostly for the static build up on the wire in the storm. Sharpened bolt would be better

Breakdown Voltage/Dielectric Strength:
The breakdown voltage for a substance or dielectric is the minimum voltage or potential difference between two ends of a substance required to cause an electric breakdown.
Dielectric Strength of a substance is the total potential difference between the two points of a substance per unit thickness of the medium; up to which the substance can withstand the electric field or up to which no Electric breakdown occurs in the substance. The dielectric strength is given by the potential gradient necessary to cause breakdown of an insulator or substance.
The standard unit of Dielectric Strength is Volt per Meter ( V/M ), a unit which is mostly used is kiloVolt per millimeter (kV/mm).
Dielectric Strength of Air:
The dielectric strength of Air is 3kV/mm, Which means that is two electrodes are placed one millimeter away from each other in air, then the air normally acts as a Insulator until the voltage between the electrodes reaches 3 kilovolts or 3000 volts, after which the air starts behaving as a good conductor which causes sparks and fire.

How to Solder copper wire to aluminum foil.

I will be making some disposable variable capacitors later today for some magnetic loop antennas.
This is also a useful technique to solder copper braid to an antenna.

I think you can use any oil. the important thing to remember is keeping Oxygen form the foil. You don’t want it to oxidize before you get the solder down.

It’s indoor and stealth good for getting info when the power is out or a natural disaster has happened.

Stealth Antenna is good when you can’t set one up outside.

However, it is surprising to find out just how many ordinary objects can act as a diode, letting current flow one way better than another.

This is how we made our diodes:
Take a small length of glass or plastic tubing–an inch of the case of a plastic pen works well. Close one end with wax, sealing a wire through the wax. Pour a little copper oxide into the tube: enough to cover the end of the wire. Fill the rest of the tube with copper filings or turnings. Poke a wire into the copper filings or turnings (but don’t let it go down to the oxide) and seal the end of the tube with wax.

Can’t find copper oxide?
Throw some copper wire into a fire. When it’s cool, scrape the oxide off the wire. Yes, there are two oxides of copper, a red oxide and a black oxide, and they both work well. We preferred the red, but I have no idea why.”

I originally planed to make this for the Crystal Radio / Fox Hole radio video I am working on. But while it technically works it is over complicated and not practical for the radio. But it sure was fun to make.

I really don’t know anything about BitCoin. This seems kind of neat.

Part of amateur radio is that no transmission may be encrypted except radio control craft. Are they circumventing this rule?

I though long and hard about this. Encryption is only allowed in radio control of models or from the control station of a satellite. This is not really encrypting communications so I doubt it would be against those rules. I’d think it would be against the no business conducted rules before the no encryption rules.

The block chains are at their most basic just lists of bitcoin transactions. (I know it’s more complicated than that) While cryptography is used to create and authenticate bitcoins and their associated transactions the block chains are distributed in plaintext. It’s not like there is a key exchange over the air and an encrypted data stream created, it’s simply updated lists of where (which wallet) the bitcoins should be.
